Ubisoft is Ready for Next-Gen

Of all of the major publishers I believe Ubisoft is the most prepared for the next generation. This billion dollar French company has some of the most iconic franchises in the world such as Assassins Creed, Far Cry,  Just Dance, Splinter Cell and more. Ubisoft also has plenty of new potential franchises such as South Park: The Stick of Truth, Watch Dogs, The Crew and The Division. Ubisoft  has also taken a smaller approach. Video games using the new Ubiart engine such as Rayman, Child of Light and Valiant Hearts all look unique and amazing. Even if games such as Watch Dogs, The crew and South Park continue to be delayed, this is okay because in the long run it means that we get better games.

The Franchises

Ubisoft, along with every other publisher loves to franchise and annualize their games. Video games such as Assassins Creed has done this very successfully. Ubisoft’s franchises include Just Dance, Assassin’s Creed, Far cry, Rock smith, Splinter Cell, Rayman, Trials and more. Franchises are the things that will let Ubisoft profit. Whether or not gamer’s like it or not if a game is successful a publisher will franchise it try and make more money.

Just a Few Ubisoft’s franchises

The next generation install base of the consoles will be considerably smaller. For Ubisoft’s franchises to be profitable they will have to bee on current gen and next gen. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next one or two Assassins Creed games are on PS3 and PS4. Although, with a large budget and new ways to innovate I can’t wait to see how Ubisoft takes advantage of the new consoles.

The New IP’s

What is possibly Ubisoft’s greatest advantage is that compared to other publishers they have a lot of new IP’s. Watch Dogs, The Crew and The Division are all new games that will benefit from being on new hardware. Over the course of the generation these games will only get better. As long as they innovate, and use the new hardware wisely then these new games have the potential to become brand new franchises.

The Division and Watch Dogs are some of the most exciting next gen games.

The Smaller Games

Ubisoft has also entered the digital games market. Digital games don’t make as much money but they usually review well. The market for smaller “indie” titles has been expanding and Ubisoft is very smart to try and enter it. The Ubiart engine which has been making the critically acclaimed Rayman series has now been expanded into other games. Games such as Child of Light and Valiant Hearts look beautiful, unique and fun. I’m excited to see what other games come out of this.

Of every major video game publisher I believe that Ubisoft is the most prepared for the next generation of consoles. This doesn’t mean that other publishers aren’t prepared but Ubisoft has an advantage. With major franchises, new IP’s and the smaller games Ubisoft is ready for the new generation.
